Raw Food Detox

by Noel Boehm on March 10th, 2008

So this week, as part of our Whole Health and Wellness theme, I am going to embark on a raw food diet. What I really wanted to do was to detox and really clean out my body. I’ve heard about the raw food lifestyle for years and decided that it was most definitely not for me. I enjoy lovely pastas and sauteed veggies WAY too much to give it up. It just occurred to me however that there’s no need to change my entire life. I could just try it for a week, couldn’t I? Can I make it a week even is the question?

The idea behind it I discovered is that the act of heating foods above 116 degrees is said to break down vital enzymes that aid in digestion and absorption. We all know that an ideal diet should consist of foods as close to their natural state as possible, so this sort of makes sense to me. Sort of. It has many expected benefits including more energy, better digestion, weight loss, lower risk of heart disease. The one that caught my eye however was improved skin appearance. Way to play to my vanities.

The obvious question then becomes, well exactly what will I eat? Just like apples and uncooked spinach or something? Low and behold there are actually a lot of really yummy looking recipes. Check out this one for “lasagna”. Seriously. If that doesn’t look good to you then I may need to come to your house and have a talk. So who’s with me? I want takers. I mean it raise your hand. Everyone who is willing to try this with me please leave a comment. Or if you already subscribe to a raw food lifestyle, please share. Starting Thursday my diet will consist of at least 75% raw food. I’m really excited for this little experiment. Please try it with me and we can compare whose skin looks dewier. Oh and shhh…the hubs doesn’t know he’s doing it too. *Snort*

if you can give me some good recepies, im all on it!! what are you eating, noel?

a ayurvedix detox i’ve heard of is to do a fruit fast one day a week; you drink lots of water and just eat fresh fruit. it sounds like a good way to end/start a week, say on saturday or sundays.

That sounds like a great idea. I was going to try some of the recipes at Gone Raw[dot]com. There was a recipe for a “cesear” salad with pumpkin seeds that I am definitely going to try. Maybe incorporating an ayurvedix detox migth be a good thing I can do every week. Thanks!

    Great post Noel!
You may want to look at the “Feast” as an organic whole food supplement to add to your detox and over all health.

    Noel,
I will absolutely try this if I have some good recipe suggestions first :) I need to detox myself badly. I love the idea and to have some inspiration (you) really helps. If you can do it, I can do it. I’m anxious to see how it goes. If you do it successfully, I will try and post about it and definitely dedicate the week to you! :) (*if* I do it)

Yeah Val’s in too! It’s debateable if I will be able to make it a week myself*snort* I’m really excite about it. I had a trial raw lunch yesterday and it was pretty yummy. I just piled stuff we already had (orange pepper, mushroom, clover sprouts, bamboo shoots) and tossed them in a mixture of sesame oil, low-sodium soy sauce and a teensy bit of dijon mustard. Then I piled the mix in pieces of romaine heartds and made little lettuce wraps.

I have to say it was really good. I will post some recipes and let you know how they turned out! The real test will be what the hubs ends up eating.

I just had a wee ephiany.

Everyone’s heard about “In defense of food”, the new book by whats-his-name ( Noel, I know you’ve referenced it somewhere). His quotable bit is to eat food- unprocessed food-, and make it mostly vegetables. That sounds a nice general rule to follow to me.

Everyone would like to lose a few lbs or improve their diet, but I personally feel when I try to make a change I get overwhelmed with the options. Eat only raw, or no sugar, or no carbs, no processed foods…it’s tough to decide on a method and stick with it.

What about baby steps, like saying, OK Ill try and limit carbs to breakfast, try to make lunch and dinner mostly vegetables. I find not focusing on the details and having a general view of improvement will make it easier to change old habits. I’m going to try this very broad way of improving my diet and see how it works. For example, Im taking my sister out to an Italian place today. Ill have salad and maybe a soup for lunch, and yes Im sure a bit of a breadstick, but that should fit into my super general healthier eating plans.

Waht do you think about the overload of information and how it affects your daily choices to be healthy?
