You Put The Lime in the Coconut

by Noel Boehm on July 28th, 2008

I love all things coconut. It comes in second only to my love of vanilla. It’s actually a family thing. My husband ended up in the emergency room with a handful of stitches one night all because he just had to have a fresh coconut. The real thing has been banned since. I did get to rip out carefully remove the stitches myself which was AWESOME. It was like a Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman moment finally come to fruition. Have I shared too much?

Anyway loving all things coconut I purchased coconut oil a while back figuring I could use it for cooking. It was simply horrible. Gagworthy. Vomitous. I stared at the jar through angry tears like I was a betrayed lover. HOWEVER, I have since discovered that really it was the brand I chose and not the coconut oil itself. I got a different brand eventually and it is actually quite tasty. I couldn’t bring myself to throw out the first jar so I have been just glaring at it reproachfully every time I open the cupboard. Well Crunchy Chicken saved that little jar’s life today since I ran across the other great uses for your hair and body. Check out what she has to say about it here. I will definitely be trying it out on my hair. I am all about the hair mask thingy. I believe in it whole heartedly. Has anyone tried it as a body moisturizer before? I would think it would be quite lux and make your skin silky. Then you could walk around smelling like you just got back from St. Tropez. I would probably smell like coconut oil on someone who hasn’t showered in a day despite the oppressive heat. Like a piña colada with sweaty funk. The truth hurts.

I use it a lot of the time for a body oil, when I want an extra sheen on my skin. You do have to let the oil absorb for a few minutes before you put your clothing on or you run the risk of stains.

I always thought coconut oil was good for your hair but never tried it for other things. I am not sure how much quantity they use for lotions etc but for there was always a certain smell that turned me off. Maybe they have to put some fragrance along with coconut oil. !!
